Description
Tumut Pondage was formed in 1958, when the Tumut River was dammed as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. Described as one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world, the Snowy Scheme consists of nine power stations, 16 major dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts and 145 kilometres of interconnected tunnels. Tumut Pond Dam is a major ungated concrete arch dam across the upper reaches of the Tumut River in the Snowy Mountains. There is a picnic area with toilets, picnic tables and a boat ramp.
