Description
The Illamurta Springs Conservation Reserve is one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots you can visit. Its natural values are due to the impressive southern foothills of the James Range and the presence of a permanent natural spring.
The site is a moist habitat for several relict aquatic plant species and it protects the ruins of the old Illamurta Springs Police Camp, open between 1893 and 1912.
Access is for four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles only. Open all year round, but roads may close after heavy rain.
If you take the Finke River 4WD Route you should have a satellite phone, EPIRB and/or personal locator beacon (PLB), extra water and a well-maintained vehicle with backup equipment.
You can do all of the following activities in the reserve: walking, wildlife spotting and nature appreciation, photography and picnicking.
When visiting the park, remember all of the following:
stay on the designated tracks and roads
historic, cultural items and wildlife are protected
firewood collection is not permitted in the reserve
fires are not permitted in the reserve
no camping is permitted in the reserve
bins are not provided, so take all your rubbish with you
pets are not permitted in the park.
