With rugged landscapes, thundering waterfalls and unlimited flora and fauna, Nitmiluk is a haven for adventurers and nature lovers alike. The name Nitmiluk, meaning 'Cicada Place', came from the Jawoyn people who are the traditional custodians of the Park. The day starts with a journey along the Stuart Highway, Australia's longest highway. It's around a 3-hour trip from Darwin to Nitmiluk National Park, however, the trip is broken up with a stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. This site is dedicated to the victims of the 1942 Bombing of Darwin and is a sobering reminder of Australia's role in World War II. Upon arrival at Nitmiluk National Park, you'll be rewarded with varied landscapes, waterfalls, and dives flora and fauna. Visit Edith Falls, a series of stunning cascading falls and pools along the Edith River. During the dry season, you can even take a refreshing dip in its waters, as the pools are thoroughly checked for crocodiles, making it safe for swimming. Throughout the day you'll get opportunities to learn about the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of the land at Nitmiluk. You'll view Aboriginal rock ark scattered throughout the park, which expresses in images the deep, spiritual culture of the Jawoyn people. Take a break for lunch, sitting in a cool, shaded outdoor setting. Then head to the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre where you're free to spend time seeing photographs, memorabilia and traditional Aboriginal artefacts. The final adventure of the day is a 2 hr cruise through the stunning Katherine Gorge with its 70-metre-high walls. Keep your eyes peeled for freshwater crocodiles, as well as wonderful birdlife and amazing scenery.
