Nauiyu,, Northern Territory
Description
Nauiyu is a remote Aboriginal community 230km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory and situated on the banks of the Daly River. The Malak Malak people who live both in Nauiyu and downstream at Wooliana are the traditional owners of the land.
English is spoken by most residents, with Ngan'gikuruggurr being the most prominent of ten local languages. The community has a store, school, health clinic and police station. The arts centre is a meeting place for the creation of paintings and craft, and hosts the annual Merrepen Arts Festival, featuring art sales, a sports carnival and music.
Nauiya is accessible by sealed road, making the Daly River accessible in most weather conditions. The road continues on to Peppimenarti, Palumpa and Port Keats (Wadeye) and is unsealed and generally closed in the wet season.

Lovely small community, very helpful local lady gave us directions to Merrepen Arts, only to find a rude Aussie manager saying they are closed. Signs said it was open, the glimpse we got looked like there were some very interesting local artwork. Unfortunately the locals have lost out this time. Told to come back on Monday this was Friday!
