Description
Dean's Creek is a remote area from town crossing margins of the saltpans that can be influenced by the tide. This area is only 12km from town, but feels world's away. It is an large, open and flat area which provides the ability to launch a boat, halving the time to the mouth of the Albert River and the expanse of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Camping permits are required and fees apply. A Camping Permit allows for staying overnight at the designated recreation areas on Gangalidda Garawa Country, whilst ensuring that landowners conditions and requirements are met.
A maximum of 7 nights can be booked at the same campsite.
Permit allows access to and fish in the Gangalidda - Garawa country
Permit holders must leave the Gangalidda - Garawa country by 8pm
Care should be taken not to cross the gutters on a high tide as they become extremely boggy, hence this site is only accessible in the 'dry'. Excellent fishing and mud-crabbing with mangroves providing the ideal habitat. Dean's Creek is the start of the Groper Dreaming story that runs from here to Roper River in the Northern Territory and is the site of many traditional camps marked by shell middens.
