Description

The stunning beach at Elim is home to the famous Coloured Sands, and a popular spot for Hope Vale people, many of whom have a shack here and visit on weekends to go fishing. It is also a popular camping spot, and the Elim Beach campground belonging to Thiithaarr-warra Elder, Eddie Deemal, is right on the water's edge with fabulous views to Cape Bedford, providing the perfect base from which to explore the area. The mesmerising dune formations of the Coloured Sands are a 300 metre walk along the beach. Driving on the beach should NOT be undertaken in a 2wd vehicle, and only in a 4wd vehicle with extreme caution at low tide. The drive from Hope Vale to Elim takes about an hour on a sealed road apart from about 4k near the end. The last few kilometres of the track winds through white silica sand hills, rugged escarpments and heath lands. The last few hundred meters is heavy sand track with dips. Drive carefully and watch for other traffic. Telstra phone connection is sometimes possible in a few spots in the camp ground. Mobile is not reliable for emergency service in and around this area. Elim Beach camp ground is totally Indigenous owned and is open for Coloured sand day visits and family camping for 11 months of the year, Closed one month in November every year. Fees: Day visits (to the coloured sands): $10.00 per vehicles Beach Front sites: $20.00 per person per night Standard sites: $15.00 per person per night Children 5 yrs to 15yrs: $5.00 each Pay at site direct to caretaker.
