Description

Located just a few kilometres northeast of town, all sites are easily accessible by all vehicles, but still secluded. There are several historical sites found in this area with the Boiling Downs Works, Landsborough Tree, and entrance to The Loop. The Loop found at the top end of this area forms part of the original channel of the Albert River, with the downstream (northern) end marked by the entrance to Norman Gully. This lower (northern) end marks the site of several shipwrecks that were deliberately burnt carrying the victims of the Gulf Fever, which forced the abandonment of the original Burketown settlement in 1866. Most sites in this area are well shaded, many with a grassy bank leading to the river and provide excellent fishing. Camping permits are required and fees apply. A Camping Permit allows for staying overnight at the designated recreation areas on Gangalidda Garawa Country, whilst ensuring that landowners conditions and requirements are met. A maximum of 7 nights can be booked at the same campsite. Permit allows access to and fish in the Gangalidda - Garawa country. Permit holders must leave the Gangalidda - Garawa country by 8pm.
