Platypus camping area is a joint camping and day-use area in a hoop pine plantation that was established in 1971. Popular with anglers, this area overlooks the dam wall. The camp area is located 4km from the western entrance and 24km from the eastern entrance of Danbulla Road.
The camping area can be reached by conventional vehicle or boat. Although the camping area as a whole is accessible by car, it is necessary to park a short distance from camp sites. It is not possible to drive onto a camp site. The Tablelands Regional Council has erected signs indicating this road is unsuitable for caravans.
There are 18 unpowered sites suitable for tents, camper trailers and campervans. Facilities include flushing toilets, shower room (bring own shower), picnic tables, wood barbecues, taps and individual fire rings.
Open fires are allowed (except when fire bans apply) in fire rings and barbecues only. Buy firewood before entering the park.
Generators and pets are not permitted in camping areas. Mobile phone coverage is generally available.
