Description

Established in 1988 by the RAOU (Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union), now BirdLife Australia, as a research and education facility, our principle aim is to work for the conservation of the migratory shorebirds which visit Roebuck Bay. The observatory is located on the north-west coast of Australia on the shores of Roebuck Bay: Just 25 kilometres east of the town of Broome and some 2,400 road kilometres north of Perth. We are currently open for accommodation, camping and tours. Our small campground provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Broome caravan parks. Amenities include toilets, hot showers, BBQ area, and our 'Shadehouse'. The Shadehouse is a fully-equipped bush kitchen/dining shelter with a large gas stove, several refrigerators, and plenty of seating. It also provides excellent views of our birdbaths, which can be enjoyed at any time of day. Linen is provided, but you will need to bring your own towel. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate pets. We welcome tents and trailers/caravans. However, because of the small size of, and narrow access to, the campground, it can be difficult to manoeuver caravans longer than 16 feet into our campsites. Sites are unpowered. We are located near the end of Crab Creek Rd - approximately 25 km from Broome. Crab Creek Road is unsealed and the final 6 km are frequently corrugated. 4WD is reccommdended to reach this campground.
