Description

Gantheaume Point encompasses a stretch of white sandy beach as well as a red rock cliff face overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Located about ten minutes from the town centre of Broome,the contrasting colours of the deep pindan red cliffs and the shimmering turquoise ocean is breathtaking and provides stunning photo opportunities. At Gantheaume Point cliffs and lighthouse, take the well-worn track past the interpretive signage to reach the cast of dinosaur footprints, always a popular attraction with children. The real dinosaur footprints, over 130 million years old and preserved in reef rock can be seen at very low tide at the bottom of the cliff. The remains of Anastasia's Pool, damaged beyond repair by a storm in January 2014, can also be seen. The pool was created by a lighthouse keeper for his wife, who believed the saltwater which filled the pool at high tide had possible healing properties for her arthritis. Access to Gantheaume Point is via the Gantheaume Point Road, off Gubinge Road. The most common access point is via the ramp opposite the Broome Turf Club carpark. 4WD vehicles are permitted in a designated area of the beach and it is important to heed signage. Parking is also available at Broome Turf Club. The spectacular views from the cliff section of Gantheaume Point is reached by a short stretch of unsealed road along Kavite Road past the beach access ramp. There you will find parking and the interpretive signage centre which showcases the history of the area. Please note that lifeguards do not patrol Gantheaume Point.
